Inside the RoleDaimler Truck North America is the market leader and thrives as the voice of the trucking industry. In the Detroit Powertrain Test Center, we are driving the powertrain R&D validation for our global Daimler Truck brand including conventional diesel and alternative powertrain components. In this position, you will support metrology activities related to prototype powertrain components. The Metrology Engineer applies engineering fundamentals and measurement principles to assist with the setup, execution, analysis, and documentation of precision measurement activities. This role supports the development and implementation of measurement methods and software programs used to evaluate component dimensions and wear characteristics. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, you will contribute to continuous improvement efforts for metrology systems, tools, and processes that support quality and validation objectives. This position provides an opportunity to develop technical expertise in measurement systems, data analysis, quality assurance, and product validation while collaborating with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams. We are looking for a detail-oriented individual with strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills who is eager to learn and grow within a technical engineering environment.

Position offers a starting salary range of $74,000 – $94,000 USD
Pay offered dependent on knowledge, skills, and experience.

Methodology Development
Support the development and implementation of engineering test methodologies, fixtures, and procedures utilizing specialized measurement equipment. Assist in establishing measurement methods that promote precision, repeatability, and reproducibility across testing and validation activities.
Measurement Systems & Data Analysis
Collect, analyze, and document measurement data while preparing reports and summaries for engineering teams. Support troubleshooting efforts related to measurement issues and assist with continuous improvement activities focused on enhancing measurement effectiveness and efficiency.
Equipment Programming, Calibration & Maintenance
Assist with programming and operating measurement equipment while following established standards and procedures. Support equipment calibration, maintenance, and verification activities to ensure reliable measurement results and compliance with applicable requirements.
Cross Functional Collaboration & Technical Leadership
Work closely with product engineering, quality, manufacturing, and laboratory personnel to support measurement requirements throughout the product development and validation process. Collaborate with technicians and team members to execute assigned projects and activities.
Standards, Procedures & Operational Excellence
Support the creation and maintenance of work instructions, procedures, and documentation that promote consistency and efficiency. Follow all safety requirements and 5S principles while contributing to a safe and organized workplace.
Technology Strategy & Onsite Validation Support
Assist with evaluating new measurement technologies, equipment, and processes that may improve testing capabilities. Provide onsite support for validation and testing activities as required.
Knowledge You Should Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, or a related engineering field.
- 0-3 years of relevant engineering, manufacturing, metrology, or quality experience.
- Basic knowledge of metrology, manufacturing, quality systems, or engineering principles.
- Familiarity with engineering drawings, GD&T, dimensional inspection, and statistical analysis concepts.
- Basic CAD experience (e.g., Siemens NX, AutoCAD, or similar).
- Product knowledge in axles, electric axles, diesel engines, and transmissions.
- Understanding of measurement equipment and quality assurance practices.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to analyze data and communicate technical information effectively.
- Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong teamwork, organization, and communication skills.
- Self-motivated with a willingness to learn new technologies and engineering processes.
Exceptional Candidates Might Have
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Computer Science Engineering, or related fields (ABET Accredited University).
- Familiarity with CMM equipment, vision systems, or other dimensional measurement technologies.
- Experience using CAD software and interpreting engineering drawings.
- Exposure to scripting or programming languages such as Visual Basic, Python, or C++.
- Knowledge of quality systems such as ISO 9001 or IATF 16949.
- Experience with data analysis and technical report writing.
- Basic understanding of automotive, powertrain, or manufacturing processes.
